Amplifying Voter Information in Our Communities

This July, United Way of Gratiot & Isabella Counties received a $5,000 grant from the Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA) to support voter engagement in our communities.

As MNA explains, “For more than 30 years, Michigan Nonprofit Association has been a trusted partner supporting nonprofits and the communities they serve. Our values of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice are reflected in our commitment to breaking down barriers and influencing change for marginalized communities.” Through partnerships like these, MNA empowers organizations to transform civic engagement and address issues that affect the wellbeing of all communities.

Throughout the summer and in the lead-up to the 2024 election, United Way has worked to ensure our community members know when, where, and how to vote. As part of the MNA grant, we participated in a voter engagement cohort, where we connected with other nonprofits—ranging from The Disability Network to Nation Outside—through monthly calls led by consultant Nadia Tonova, founder of NHT Consulting. These discussions allowed us to share ideas, resources, and strategies to strengthen our collective impact on voter education.

One major benefit of this initiative has been access to digital and physical media that help us spread awareness of Michigan's key voting dates, voter registration information, how to vote by mail, and ballot details. We’ve used these tools to reach voters in our community, ensuring they are informed and empowered.

For small non-profit agencies, these resources make a big difference in the work we do beyond a single election. “This was our first year participating in the voter engagement cohort. The education and resources provided by MNA, Nadia, and our fellow grantees have significantly strengthened our advocacy capacity. These learnings will continue to empower our organization as we engage our community and advance our mission,” says Annie Sanders, President & CEO of United Way of Gratiot & Isabella Counties.

To build a strong, equitable community, we know that everyone must have a voice in their government.

At United Way, we advocate to:

  • Protect universal access to the ballot box.

  • Make registering to vote easier so every person in our community can make their voice heard.

  • Provide polling and election information so all voters can make an informed decision.

  • Ensure our elections remain accessible and secure for all.
